Approved on November 15, 2004

A. PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF JEWISH LIFE: Hillel at Stanford exists primarily to enable students to develop a deepened and positive Jewish identity. Hillel at Stanford works to ensure that Stanford is a hospitable environment for Jewish students to comfortably and freely express and explore Jewish religion, culture and identity. Hillel also works to guarantee that Stanford is hospitable to Jewish practice and identity in the following ways:

1. Hillel at Stanford works with University officials to ensure that the University environment supports expression of Jewish life (i.e. ensuring that students can opt-out of non-Kosher dining; ensuring that scheduling conflicts with major Jewish holidays are addressed).

2. Hillel at Stanford provides support, guidance and counseling to any student who feels that his or her Judaism or pro-Israel stance has caused him or her any problem at Stanford. Hillel at Stanford professional staff will request administrative clarifications, and action, including legal action, when appropriate, regarding any situation in which it appears that a Jewish student has suffered any discrimination or act of intolerance1 related to the student’s being Jewish or expressing support for the Jewish people, Jewish culture, or the State of Israel.

B. SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL: Hillel at Stanford is committed to Israel’s flourishing as a Jewish democratic state with secure and recognized borders. See “Hillel at Stanford’s Israel-Related Programming Guidelines” for details regarding implementation of this commitment.

C. FREE SPEECH: Hillel at Stanford is committed to the constitutional guarantees of free speech and open debate. As an organization that exists within a university context, Hillel at Stanford is supportive of the University’s commitment to intellectual freedom and exploration for all individuals and groups.

D. RESPONSE TO ANTI-SEMITISM: Hillel at Stanford will oppose and respond to any expressions of anti-Semitism at Stanford. Hillel at Stanford will bring all acts of anti-Semitism at Stanford to the attention of university officials and request that the University responds appropriately, including legally, when appropriate.

E. RESPONSE TO PROTECTED SPEECH IN OPPOSITION TO HILLEL’S COMMITMENTS: Consistent with Hillel at Stanford’s commitment to free speech and open debate, when individuals or organizations express views opposed to Hillel’s commitments to Israel and Jewish life, and when such expressions are considered protected speech Constitutionally and according to University guidelines, the professional staff of Hillel at Stanford will work with students to develop and implement strategies to respond to such expressions. These strategies may include producing counter-educational materials, media strategies, proactive related programming, petitions, etc.

F. PARTNERSHIP WITH JEWISH AGENCIES: Hillel at Stanford partners with local and national Jewish agencies – such as Hillel: the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the Jewish Community Relations Council, the Anti-Defamation League, AIPAC, the Israel on Campus Coalition, and others – to develop a coordinated strategy and to formulate implementation plans for proactive and responsive programming in the above areas and beyond.

1 “Act of Intolerance” is defined as “conduct that adversely and unfairly targets an individual or group on the basis of sex, race, color, disability, religion, sexual orientation, and/or national/ethnic origin,” according to Stanford University, An Acts of Intolerance Protocol for Faculty, Staff, and Students. Hillel at Stanford upholds the guidelines set forth in that Protocol.
